When a shared album is enough
If your guests all use Google, you do not mind compression, and you are happy for anyone with the link to add anything, a shared album will do the job for nothing. Do guests need a Google account to add photos to a shared album?
Generally yes, to contribute rather than just view, as verified in July 2026. That is the main friction point at an event, because guests who are not signed in on the phone in their hand will usually give up rather than log in.
Does Google Photos compress event photos?
It depends on the Google account’s backup setting rather than on sharing itself: on Storage saver, photos and video are saved as smaller copies; on Original quality they are not. For most everyday use that is invisible. For the one set of photos from your wedding or your child’s christening, it is the difference between the file your guest took and a smaller copy of it.
